How is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction involves the use of small steel tubes, called cannulas, that suction excess collections of fat from unwanted areas. The area is first numbed with anesthetic fluid, which is called tumescent fluid, and the cannula is inserted through very small skin incisions in the skin, hidden in areas not normally seen. Once suction is applied, the fat is literally removed while the surgeon sculptures the area for the best contour. You see a reduction of the fat that results in an improved body contour.

Why Do I Have “pockets” of excess Fat deposits?

The distribution of fat in your body depends a lot on your heredity, or genetics. The genes from their family decide on where those fat bulges go. As we get older, many people see an excess accumulation of fat in these areas. This extra fat is sometimes hard to reduce with just exercise and dieting. Liposuction is one of the best and most realistic methods of significantly reducing these fatty deposits, fighting genetics, to improve the body’s silhouette.

Which Areas can be Treated with Liposuction?

Men and women have different distributions of fat. In men, the most frequently treated areas by liposuction are the baggy fatty chin, fatty breasts, the abdomen (floppy belly), and flanks (love handles or muffin-tops). Most men just can’t seem to get rid of the extra fat deposits especially in the flanks and the abdomen, so liposuction is a great relief for them. In some men, the breasts can get enlarged and fatty due to multiple reasons and these can be embarrassing to many men. “Man Boobs” are treated well and reduced significantly with liposuction.

Does Liposuction Remove the extra Fat Permanently?

Liposuction removes fat cells permanently; they are gone forever. Once gone, they cannot grow back. As long as the patient does not gain an excessive amount of weight, the new, more pleasing silhouette is permanent. However, you can always make more fat cells from you fat stem cells that remain, or the existing fat cells can enlarge and get bigger. Thus, after liposuction you should always maintains an appropriate weight with the proper diet and adequate exercise for life.

What is the Tumescent Liposuction technique?

The technique of tumescent liposuction involves using a special anesthetic fluid called “Tumescent fluid”. Here, large volumes of a dilute solution of lidocaine are infused into the fatty areas to anesthetize, or numb, the skin. Consequently, the liposuction procedure can be performed while you’ are awake and it is virtually painless. In addition, a vasoconstrictive drug, epinephrine, is added which shrinks the vessels and capillaries, resulting in very little bleeding and longer postop numbness. Thus, your recover is very well tolerated and you can return to work quicker. The tumescent technique is generally considered the safest form of liposuction

Is Tumescent Liposuction Painful?

Once the Tumescent fluid is infiltrated into the fatty areas, the skin and the area to be treated is numb. Thus, the liposuction can be performed virtually painlessly with minimal discomfort. We also give mild sedation to improve your comfort. In addition, because the numbness remains in the treated area for several hours after the procedure, there is minimal pain after surgery too.

What are the Risks of Liposuction?

Liposuction is considered one of the safest cosmetic procedures performed today if done by a trained and qualified cosmetic surgeon. Everyone gets swelling and temporary numbness. Bruising may occur but resolves in a few weeks. Mild irregularities of the skin are possible, but you can help these over time with gentle massage. Any surgical procedure may result in infections, bleeding and nerve injury. Fortunately, these potential problems are very rare with this technique because of the effect by the tumescent fluid.

When can I Return to Work and Other Activities?

Most patients are able to return to normal physical activities within a day or two after the tumescent liposuction. There is no limitation of physical activity other than what common sense would suggest. Most people are also able to return to exercise activities within a day or two after surgery. Many are tender or sore, but the level of soreness is variable depending on the individual.
