Hormone Pellet Therapy FAQ
How do Pellets Differ From Regular Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Pellets are inserted under the woman’s skin in the fatty tissue area every 3 to 4 months. They slowly and continually release hormones to the woman’s body and the ups and downs of other therapies are avoided. Plus, by avoiding the GI tract, the hormones do not go through the liver like pills do. They are thus not immediately metabolized and changed by the liver. Liver metabolism of oral hormones is called the “first pass effect” and it can alter the hormones and ones metabolism. By avoiding this liver metabolism, more of the natural hormone can work for the woman. Because they are continuous release tablets, you don’t have to take pills every day, apply messy creams or place sticky patches on your skin any longer. They are much more convenient.
Why do Pellets Work Better than Oral Hormone Therapy?
Women love the Pellets simply because of the way the Pellets make them feel. Most women feel a boost in their energy and their moods, plus their libido appears to be increased too. They seem to feel younger and they tend to be more active. Without the liver metabolism as with oral hormones, women are given the added benefits of improved heart health since the liver metabolism is bypassed and an abnormal change in the lipids is not seen.
How Are the Pellets Inserted?
During a quick office visit, the Pellets are inserted quickly and easily. First, the skin is numbed with a local anesthetic to make sure the procedure is painless. A small incision is then made in the skin and the pellets are inserted below the skin into the fatty tissue. Finally, steri-strips and a Band-Aid are applied. The entire procedure may last 10 to 15 minutes and one resumes normal activities immediately. Blood tests are used to help adjust the dose of the pellets so you get the correct amount of hormones.
Are Pellets Bioidentical Hormones?
Pellets are indeed bioidentical hormones. In other words, they are the same hormones that your body would produce naturally. These hormones are primarily estrogen and testosterone, and these are the natural hormones produced by a woman’s ovaries during her younger years before menopause. The dose of the hormones is individualized and compounded specifically per each patient’s needs by compounding pharmacies. Most patients will need pellets inserted every three to four months.
Can Men Use Pellets too?
Both men and women have a reduction in hormone levels as they grow older. Both genders benefit from this hormone supplementation. Therefore, Dr. True offers hormone pellets to both men and women. Men also feel better with hormones, have more energy, experience an increased sex drive, and can maintain muscle mass and weight better.
