Uterine Cancer Detection

Any abnormal vaginal bleeding in a women over the age of 30 can be a potential sign of cancer of the uterus. This cancer occurs mostly in women over the age of 50, but early precancerous conditions can occur in women 30 to 50 years of age. If you have abnormal bleeding and you are over 30 years old, you deserve an evaluation to determine the cause of this bleeding.

One of the best methods to evaluate uterine bleeding is through a test called a hysterosonogram and endometrial biopsy. Here, we anesthetize the cervix with a local anesthetic, similar to what you receive in a dentist’s office. Next, a very thin tube is inserted into the cavity of the uterus. A sonogram is then performed while fluid is injected into the uterus through the thin tube. Many abnormalities can be visualized and detected this way. Finally, as the tube is withdrawn, a small amount of tissue is obtained for pathologic evaluation. The procedure is an office based procedure and one returns to normal activities immediately.

Once the diagnosis for the abnormal bleeding is obtained, further therapy can be considered. If a precancerous lesion is detected or other growths or tumors seen, options on the appropriate therapy for each individual person is discussed. These may include no treatment, endometrial ablation therapy, or a hysterectomy. We always discuss options because the patient’s concerns should always be considered with any therapy. Through this thorough analysis, precancerous and cancerous lesions of the uterus can be detected and treated early for better survival.
