Awake Cosmetic Procedures Dallas
Many women are afraid of undergoing general anesthesia for cosmetic procedures. Thus, the Awake method allows them to have certain procedures performed without the use of a general anesthetic. They can be awake during the entire procedure but they don’t feel the procedure being performed.
The reason is that we can do these procedures is because of a unique fluid called tumescent anesthetic fluid. This fluid can numb an entire body area in a safe fashion and allow cosmetic procedures to be performed while the patient is awake, yet without pain. General anesthesia is when the person is put to sleep so she feels no pain during the procedure. However, she may or may not need a tube down her throat to help her breath adequately.
Tumescent fluid is made of several safe medications when used appropriately. Lidocaine is a common anesthetic that many people have experienced when they go to the dentist for teeth procedures. They numb the teeth so you can’t feel the procedure being performed. Epinephrine is used to slow the absorption of the lidocaine so more can be administered, thus allowing us to cover a larger area. Finally, bicarbonate is added to decrease stinging from injection of the lidocaine.
Procedures that can be performed comfortably using the tumescent technique include liposuction, fat transfer, breast augmentation, breast lift procedures, and buttock thread lift procedures. Tummy tucks and buttocks augmentations have also been performed using this technique, but many women prefer deep sedation for these procedures for added comfort.
Avoiding general anesthesia can be a safer alternative for performing these procedures. General anesthesia has been associated with potential side effects, such as increased risks of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary emboli, malignant hyperthermia, respiratory and cardiac problems. These, fortunately are rare, but even more rare when the cosmetic procedure is performed without the use of general anesthesia, i.e. awake.
