Many people wonder if liposuction permanently removes fat from the area in which it is performed. Liposuction is a procedure involving long tubes, called cannulas, hooked up to a suction machine, that suck fat from unwanted bulging areas of the body to result in a better contour of the body’s shape.  The procedure is especially helpful for those people who have bulging fatty areas of their bodies that they don’t like, and they just can’t seem to get rid of those pesky areas despite doing adequate exercise and dieting.

Once the fat is suctioned and removed from that area, there is a noticeable reduction in the amount of fat in the area resulting in a better shape when done properly.  Once the fat cells are removed, they are gone forever.  However, you can always make more fat cells.  There are stem cells in your fat that can start to replicate and replenish the number of fat cells in any area of your body.  This process starts to happen when you’re eating too much and your body is then needing to store all that extra food.  Your body stores it in the form of fat.  When the fat cells that exist at our full, the body just makes more fat cells to store more fat.  Therefore, if you gain weight and eat too much while not exercising enough, you can grow more fat cells.

Thus, it is imperative that if you want to keep the areas treated by liposuction thinner with minimal fat present, then you need to practice a good healthy lifestyle to keep your weight down in your desired range.  This will maintain a more beautiful figure too.  Thus, after you do liposuction to not gain weight just keep exercising and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Actually, this is something that everybody should do all the time to improve their health anyway!

Liposuction is not a procedure for weight loss.  Only a few pounds of fat are removed during any liposuction procedure, whether it be by a smart lipo, vaser, or any other technique of liposuction.  In addition, for the best results, before undergoing a liposuction procedure one should lose weight if they are overweight, so they are near a more normal weight.  In doing so they most likely will get the best result from the liposuction procedure. In addition, maintaining a healthy weight will also help prevent the fat cells from reproducing and making more fat.

Many people have the misconception that fat will “travel” to other parts of their body from the liposuction the areas treated.  This is a total myth.  The fat removed from the areas treated by the liposuction is removed permanently. However now the areas treated have fewer fat cells while the other parts of your body have the same number of fat cells in the normal fatty areas.  If you gain weight, then those areas with a normal number of fat cells will reproduce and get larger much greater than in those areas where liposuction was performed. Thus, the appearance is that the liposuction caused the increase in fat cells in the normal not treated areas. However, this is simply not true, and the patient just gained weight and the weight gained was in those areas not treated by the liposuction procedure.

Liposuction is a very safe procedure that can be performed while you’re awake using a local anesthetic so you’re very comfortable and not in pain during the procedure, but you still get a great result.  However, if many areas of liposuction are needed to be performed, then it would be necessary to administer the more general type of anesthetic.

In addition, many times liposuction is performed at the same time as doing other procedures, such as breast augmentation, breast lift, arm lift, thigh lift, and tummy tuck procedures. Normally these would also need a more general anesthetic to perform these procedures combined.  However, the liposuction produces a much better result when it is necessary combined with these procedures.

In conclusion, liposuction removes the fat from unwanted bulging areas of the body for contouring of the body.  The fat removed is permanently gone but you can always gain more weight and make more fat cells.  Thus, if you’re planning on doing a liposuction procedure, plan also on maintaining your weight to a healthy normal weight so you don’t get extra growth of fat in the area treated and in other areas of your body.
